Originally a port belonging to a Dalmatian tribe, Salona became a city under Julius Caesar. As with all colonies, the city follows the Roman model: as well as the many administrative and private buildings, it possesses a forum, thermal baths, a theatre and amphitheatre, temples, an aqueduct, a water conveyance system and ramparts. Christianity was established here through the Apostle Paul in the 2C and places of worship were built in the eastern part of the city.
