Mestrovic bought this former summer residence to display his sculptures. He had the Holy Cross chapel built for one of his most personal creations: a series of gigantic carved bas-reliefs in wood depicting the Life of Christ. Like a long succession of paintings, they draw the eye to a striking emaciated Crucifix. The artist began this vast work during the First World War in response to the terrible suffering which resulted from it.
