This square was directly inspired by St Mark's in Venice. It stands on the garden laid out by Marmont and is lined with arcaded edifices and the elegant orange-coloured façade of the neo-Renaissance Prokurative adorned with Venetian lions (late 19C early 20C). To the north was the theatre, and the wings housed the municipal buildings. Despite its grandiose allure, the square is rarely packed, except during the summer when open-air shows are staged here.
