Dominating Old Havana, the dome of this colossus rises to 94m in height. This vestige of the American era is a replica of the Capitol in Washington. Built in 1929, today it houses the academy of sciences. The exterior staircase is flanked by monumental statues symbolising Work and Virtue. Inside everything is grandiose, from the allegorical statue of the republic (17.5m high, 49t) to the hall of lost steps (120m), running off which are rooms decorated with frescoes and precious wood carvings.
