Lying at the entrance to the bay between the Castillo San Salvador and the church of San Francisco de Paula, this bastion of Spanish colonialism embodies four centuries of illustrious history and is a Unesco World Heritage site. At its centre is Plaza de la Catedral, surrounded by a maze of partially restored little streets, neo-Baroque palaces, fortlets looking out to sea, aristocratic residences and popular “cantinas”. Its southern end is untroubled by mass tourism and remains unspoilt.
