This very busy square is best seen early in the morning or by night when subtle lighting gives it a magical quality. This picture postcard of a square in creole colours offers tourists fortune tellers, flower sellers in traditional costume and of course musicians. It acquired its name in the 18C when the old Jesuit church was consecrated as the cathedral. During the same era, rich aristocrats built their houses here, many of which are today museums.
