Time seems to have stood still in this languid port sited on a crescent-shaped bay which had its heyday in the 19C. On strolling past its imposing wave-battered fortifications and charming white façades, visitors will soon succumb to its pleasant mood of tropical lethargy. Well off the beaten track, Gibara is earning a reputation as a laid-back destination. Its three museums (note especially the museum of decorative arts) complement one another nicely.

Gibara Museum of Decorative Arts
Calle Independencia CUB - Gibara
Located in a fine building that was the headquarters of General Calixto García in 1898, the museum of decorative arts recreates a 19C aristocratic interior. Note also the stained glass that embellishes the interior doors of houses.
