Nueva Gerona Travel guide
Nueva Gerona : Michelin's recommendations
The huge Parque Central and Calle 39 make up the throbbing heart of Nueva Gerona, capital of Isla de la Juventud. Its arcades and terraces draw locals seeking a cool spot and a chat, tradesmen and students. The town was a penal colony during the Spanish period and from the early 20C was the site of the Presidio Modelo jail, notably where Fidel Castro was held. Its museum, the Museo de la Lucha Clandestina, and the ship El Pinero recall the years of revolutionary struggle.
