The gentle pace of the town contrasts with the bustling activity of Calle José Martí, the main thoroughfare which follows on after the motorway. Two buildings stand out: on the corner with Calle Comandante Pinares stands the Palacio Guasch, a surprising blend of Gothic and Moorish styles. Built in 1917, the building today houses the Museo de Ciencias Naturales Sandalio de Noda. On the corner of Calle Colón, note also the Teatro José Jacinto Milanés, a wooden theatre built in 1883.
