Part of the province of Pinar del Río, Vuelta Abajo lies between the Guaniguanico mountain range and the beaches of the east coast. This is a tobacco region, as is evident from its landscape dotted by driers shaded by palm leaves, and covered in plantations (vegas) supplying the most exacting producers. These silt-rich red plains are home to guajiros (peasants) whose hospitality is legendary.
