Santiago’s first republican mayor, Emilio Bacardí, wanted to remind the locals of Cuba’s cultural richness. His museum is split into three sections (history, fine arts, archaeology) and has items from further afield too, Bacardí donated a host of objects he acquired on his travels, resulting in an Aladdin’s cave, with items galore guaranteed to surprise and delight. It is a surreal collection taking in instruments of torture from the days of slavery, quality works of art, mummies and Jivaro shrunken heads.
