With little of it undeveloped, this peninsula is largely built over by tourist infrastructure. To the east of Varadero is the Mansión du Pont de Nemours, also known as Xanadú, built in 1930 for a French millionaire and now a luxury hotel where guests sip drinks looking out towards Florida. Beyond, some wild pockets remain, like the Aera Protegida Varahicacos, centred on a lagoon used by migratory birds. Don’t miss theCueva de Ambrosio with its pre-Columbian rock paintings.
