The Austrian Eggenberg family was behind the splendid Baroque gardens linked to the theatre by a covered bridge. Today restored, they have more or less regained their original aspect: French-style flower beds, a fountain of Neptune adorned with statues and hedges clipped into neat geometrical motifs, while to the west, lies a more untamed area with lovely trees and a lake. There is also an outdoor and an indoor riding exercise area, and the Bellarie, a delightful Rococo pavilion now linked to a rotating modern stage.
