Sitting atop an isolated hill and visible from far away on the plains, the ancient town of Melník overlooks the confluence of the two largest rivers in Bohemia, the Vltava and the Elbe. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the castle tower above vineyards that produce some of country’s best wines. The castle has some medieval sections, but was mainly built in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, featuring arcades and bold sgraffito decorations. The church, originally Romanesque, was redone in the Gothic style in the 14C and 15C. The crypt contains a vast ossuary.
