Terezín
: Michelin's recommendations
In 1941 the Nazis emptied this gloomy fortified city of its inhabitants and turned it into a ghetto for Czech Jews, and subsequently from Germany and other countries. The misleading propaganda described Theresienstadt as a ‘‘rough but civilised’’ community. In reality it was a stopover on the way to the ‘‘final solution’’. The Ghetto Museum retraces this dramatic period in the city’s history. The little fortress was turned into a prison by the Nazis, and the national cemetery is where thousands of victims from the Terezín ghetto were laid to rest.
