Boca Chica owes its fame to a coral reef that forms a shallow lagoon of turquoise seawater. The heyday of this seaside resort, founded by a sugar magnate in the 1920s, occurred under the rule of Trujillo. Spoilt by the tourist boom in the 70s, Boca Chica also suffered from its reputation as a hub of prostitution. Today, the authorities are trying very hard to eradicate this problem and many of the most dubious establishments have been closed down.
