Located in an attractive old house, Máximo Gómez Museum contains documents, souvenirs and a library devoted to Cuba's independence. Máximo Gómez, the most famous Latin American to have fought for Cuba's independence, was born in Baní, in the Dominican Republic and travelled to Cuba in 1865. Three years later, he joined the island's fight. In 1868, Cuba launched the first war of independence to end Spanish domination. Máximo Gómez, married to a Cuban, was all the more sensitive to the cause of this neighbouring island.
