Puerto Plata
: Michelin's recommendations
It would be unthinkable to go to the northern coast without visiting Puerto Plata, founded in the late 15C, whose 16C fort remains a solid architectural fixture. Fine Victorian abodes (one of which houses the Amber Museum) in the centre bear witness to the town's prosperity, while the Malecón is extremely lively in the evenings and at the weekends. The surrounding countryside is also worthy of mention. The Parque Nacional Isabel de Torres will delight nature lovers, Playa Dorada will suit siesta addicts and the Parque nacional histórico La Isabela will captivate history fans.
