The second largest city of the country, located in the heart of the lush valley of Cibao, Santiago de los Caballeros has always been one of the driving forces of the Dominican economy. Coffee, sugar cane, tobacco, forestry and mining, as well as cattle, have all contributed to its ceaseless prosperity. Santiago is also renowned for its carnival, which takes place in February down Avenida Las Carreras, and for its music. It is the birthplace of merengue, played by trios called pericos ripiaos, whose music blares out during the town's evenings and nights.
