Alcázar de Colón, in ruins in the Fifties, has been partially rebuilt according to the original plans, which date back to the early 16C. The Alcázar, which features an unusual rectangular interior, was the former palace of Viceroy don Diego Colomb and the headquarters of the Spanish Viceroys of Hispaniola. The sumptuous furnishings reproduce the atmosphere of a Spanish royal palace. One splendid terrace overlooks the Ozama river, while a second gallery terrace, commanding a view of the Plaza de España, is separated from the former by a huge corridor that served as a reception hall.
