The Jardín Botánico Nacional is dedicated to the Dominican botanist Rafael Moscoso, who founded Santo Domingo's botanic institute. An oasis in the city, the park is home to most of the species, endemic and otherwise, inventoried on the island. It is divided into several sections, laid out around a 20m-diameter floral clock: aquatic plants, orchids, arboretum, palm grove, a "riverbed" (1.6km-long natural sanctuary), Japanese garden and medicinal plants. An animal sanctuary occupies 40% of the estate.
