The Museo Naval de la Atarazana is housed in a former arsenal and customs warehouse. It is also one of the most fascinating examples of colonial architecture. Inside, beneath three naves built out of brick and upheld by stone columns, the naval history museum's collections feature many artefacts from the countless Spanish galleons that foundered off the coast of Hispaniola on their return to the colonies. Restoration work begun in 2008 is underway for an indeterminate duration.
