Isla Saona (110km²) was inhabited by the Taíno, as the archaeological excavations have revealed. In the 17C and 18C, the island was a hideaway for pirates and buccaneers. In the 1940s-50s, it was repopulated as the government settled several dozen families on its shores. Their descendents now make up the 360-strong population of the delightful village of Mano Juan, with colourful houses and sandy streets. Catuano is the most popular beach. Admire the starfish in the transparent water (without of course removing them).
