Lago Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Caribbean, extends from the Sierras de Neiba, in the north, to Bahoruco, in the south. Its very salty waters are the result of the gradual enclosure of an inland expanse of water. Driving on routes 46 and 68, you can tour the lake and explore an amazing landscape in a stifling heat. American crocodiles, which like salt water, have taken up abode here, as have pink flamingos, herons, sterns and many species of birds. Isla Cabritos, a wildlife paradise, rises from the centre of the lake.
