The Reserva Científica Laguna del Rincón protects the country's largest fresh water lagoon (30km²). The lake is home to reptiles (iguanas), huge colonies of resident and migrating birds (pink flamingos, herons, cormorants) and countless species of fish, in particular tilapias that provide the locals with a profitable income. Since 1997, the reserve is a listed national park, leading to the expansion of the protection of its banks, whose lush vegetation encourages the biodiversity.
