The 208km² Parque Nacional Los Haitises is spread over the largest karst region of the Caribbean. The limestone rocks, eroded over time by water, have given rise to fascinating landscapes of grottoes, gorges, dry valleys, mogotes (rocks rising from the sea) and assorted poljés (a sort of circular depression). The flora is characteristic of humid subtropical forestland while the wildlife is depicted by parrots, frigates and ibis. Turtles and manatees live in the mangroves.
