Located downstream of the First Cataract of the River Nile, Elephantine Island was formerly known as a trading place for ivory. Its name may have come from this, or from its shape resembling an elephant tusk.
Enjoy a scenic, private felluca ride followed by a guided tour of the island. Standing at what used to be the border between ancient Egypt and Nubia, this area is known for its artifacts dating back to the predynastic period. In addition, according to myth, the island is the dwelling place of Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, who guarded and controlled the waters of the Nile.
