Hanging Church:
Begin your tour by visiting the 3rd-century Hanging Church, reached by way of 29 stairs. This Coptic church boasts vivid medieval murals and an ancient marble pulpit. Follow the passageway to the crypt of the Church of St Sergius, said to mark the spot where the Holy Family rested at the end of their journey to Egypt.
Ben Ezra Synagogue:
Wander through winding streets to reach the Jewish synagogue of Ben Ezra. Originally a church, it was sold to the Jewish community in the 9th century to pay taxes imposed by the Muslim rulers of the time.
The Mosque of Amr Ibn El-Aas:
The building of the oldest mosque in Egypt is surrounded by legend, including one claiming a column was miraculously transported from Mecca on the orders of Mohammed himself.
Coptic Museum:
Situated in two early 20th-century buildings within the walled Roman fortress of Babylon, the Coptic Museum contains such artifacts as funeral steel carved with Coptic inscriptions, manuscripts, icons, textiles, and examples of ivory, wood, pottery, and glass.
Salah El Din Citadel and Mohamed Ali Mosque:
Visit one of the old fortresses built in the beginning of the Islamic era by Salah el Din the Auyybid. Learn about the famous massacre of Egypt's ruler Mohamed Ali, who got rid of the last mamlouks in Egypt within the walls of the citadel. Mohamed Ali then built the Mosque of Mohamed Ali, in memory of his beloved son.
