El Kharga
: Michelin's recommendations
The capital of the "New Valley", so named by Nasser in reference to the large-scale projects undertaken to modernise the oases, Kharga distinguishes itself from the pack thanks to its resolutely civilised appearance. Agriculture is extremely widespread here. If you want to explore the oases in order, this would be the place to start. Travellers won't be disappointed as the archaeological sites on the edge of the desert are truly beautiful, especially the Bagawat necropolis.
