The site is called the Northern Monastery, after the monastery the Christians set up in Hatshepsut's Temple in the 6C and 7C. The valley used to be called Nefer-Neferu, the Sublime of the Sublimes. The deadly attack on 17 November 1997 for which the Gama'at al-Islamiya group claimed responsibility propelled the site into the media spotlight and, as in the rest of Egypt, security has been boosted here.
