The name of Rosetta, the "city of a million palm trees", is forever linked to the Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832), who in 1822 deciphered the hieroglyphs engraved on the famous basalt stele thereafter known as the "Rosetta Stone". Stroll around the old town and you will come across pretty Ottoman houses decorated with splendid meshrebiyas.
