It was designed by Alvar Aalto as one of a collection of cultural edifices in the new Town Centre destined to be built around the Bay of Töölön. The central part of the building was completed in 1971, with the addition of a conference wing in 1975. Entirely in white Carrara marble, the long low façade rests on a black marble base.
