The collections held in the Fine Arts museum provide an insight into Finnish art from the 18C up to the 1960's. Finnish pictorial art (aside schools and exhibitions) is fairly recent, with the exception of anonymous mural frescos found in churches and often lost with the walls that supported them. It was not until the mid 19C that a movement inspired by the Düsseldorf school flourished, giving rise to the national Romanticism that brought the country its first great painters.
