This picturesque coastal town is one of the few in Finland never to have been destroyed by fire. Founded as Kristinestad in 1649 by Swedish governor Per Brahe, it owed its name to his wife Kristina, also that of the then queen of Sweden. It is an important commercial and services hub for the coast’s Swedish-speaking communities.
