Kristiinankaupunki Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

This picturesque coastal town is one of the few in Finland never to have been destroyed by fire. Founded as Kristinestad in 1649 by Swedish governor Per Brahe, it owed its name to his wife Kristina, also that of the then queen of Sweden. It is an important commercial and services hub for the coast’s Swedish-speaking communities.

  • Kristinestad: old town Recommended Recommended

    Kattpiskargränden FIN - 65101 Kristiinankaupunki

The old town fans out around the central market square, and has retained its authenticity, with its brightly coloured wooden houses (17C-18C) and narrow streets and alleyways. The narrowest street has the curious name of "Cat Whipper Alley"..
