The historic quarter around the central market place has retained its authenticity with brightly-coloured wooden houses (17C and 18C) and narrow streets and alleyways. The narrowest has the curious name of "cat whipper alley" (Kattpiskargränden). At the top of Kyrkogatan stands Ulrika Eleonora kyrka, a pretty wooden church built in 1700. Its arrow points towards the town hall (1856) to the left, designed by EB Lohrman. On the other side, two minuscule wooden buildings (1687 and 1720) were used by customs.
