The Åland Museum and Museum of Fine Arts share a building adjoining the city's administrative headquarters. The Åland Museum's fine collection retraces the culture and history of the islands from prehistoric times to the present day. The Museum of Fine Arts exhibits works by local artists and canvases by painters from further afield, most of which show local scenes, with nature a prominent theme. Carl Emanuel Jansson (1846-1887) and Joel Pettersson (1892-1937) are the most famous artists whose work is shown here.
