Pori is well known beyond Finland’s frontiers for its jazz festival, which takes place in mid-July. For four days, the town lives, eats and sleeps jazz. The main outdoor concerts take place in the verdant setting of the island of Kirjurinluoto, and on the lovely Yyteri beach (at Meri-Pori, 20km to the northwest), popular with windsurfers. Pori is also a major sea port – albeit sited 20km away at Kokemäenjoki – and has thriving wood and chemical products industries.
