Until the 18C, Porvoo was the country's second largest commercial hub after Turku. The colony established on the banks of the River Porvoo prospered under the protection of a powerful fortress and in 1346 was granted a charter by the King of Sweden, Magnus Eriksson. The current centre separates the medieval town from the Empire-style area, designed around 1830 by architect Carl Ludvig Engel to retain the memory of national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, whose home can be visited. The cathedral and two museums in the old town are also worth seeing.
