The historical quarter was the working centre of town until the 19C. It burned down in 1760; many of the fine wooden houses therefore date from the late 18C and early 19C. Charming little houses, brightly coloured with neat gardens, line the winding cobbled streets. Östra Långgatan used to be the workers' quarter. To enjoy a typical view of Porvoo, with its ochre-red warehouses lining the river and the old quarter climbing the hillside up to the cathedral, follow Jokikatu / Ågatan northwards until up to the bridge.
