This is a charming old town with wooden houses dating from the 17C and 18C. The historical centre is best visited by foot: the 15C Franciscan Holy Cross Church (Pyhän Ristin kirkko) near to River Raumanjoki; the market place (Kauppatori) alongside the graceful little town hall (1776) which houses a museum dedicated to Rauma's maritime past and local lace. Marela (access via Kauppakatu then Isopoikkikatu) is the opulent residence of a shipowner.
