Savonlinna : Michelin's recommendations

This charming town is magnificently situated on a string of islands separating lakes Haapavesi and Pihlajavesi, forming part of Saimaa lake system. Savonlinna grew up in the shadow of Olav Castle (Olavinlinna), built on an island, and has frequently been subject to conflicts involving this strategically important fortress. Arriving from the east over the bridge spanning the Kyrönsalmi strait, visitors have a marvellous view of the castle and its island.
