Vaasa Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Nordic in ambience, this port dates from the early 14C when Swedish sailors established a settlement on an island in the gulf of Bothnia. By the late 14C they had built Korsholm Castle. In 1606, Charles IX granted a charter to Korsholm and renamed it Vaasa in honour of the Swedish dynasty. Destroyed by fire in 1852, it was rebuilt 6km to the west in Empire and neo-Renaissance styles, augmented by the advent of modernism in the 1960s. Revell, one of Finland's great 20C architects, was from Vaasa.
