The museum’s ground floor has foreign paintings, notably by French artists (Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso); upstairs are Finnish paintings dating from 1850 to 1940. This major collection has works by talented Finnish artists like Fanny Churberg, A. Gallen-Kallela, A. Edelfelt, Eero Järnefelt and Tyko Sallinen. A section on Österbotten artists displays work by Eemu Myntti (1890-1943), a colourist of Romantic inspiration, and miniaturist Arvi Mäenpää (1899-1979), who painted local folklore in a mischievous style.
