An information technology and high-tech industry hub, the town grew up in the 19C close to rapids and vast forests, at a crossroads of waterways used for shipping wood. Some of its industrial buildings are modernist masterpieces. The Lutheran church (1939) by Martti Paalanen is a rare example of a functionalist ecclesiastical building with Classical echoes. A 240m2 wall painting, When the Kingdom Comes (1954), adorns the altar wall. The museum of mechanical music has over 200 instruments.
