The wooded hill overlooking the lake was the ideal setting for artists aspiring to get back to nature: the musicians Jean Sibelius and Robert Kajanus, writer Maxim Gorki and painters such as Gallen-Kallela and Edvard Munch. Until 1923 the architect Eliel Saarinen lived in the main building, now a museum. Designed as a manifesto of national Romanticism, it contains frescoes by Gallen-Kallela. Armas Lindgren (1874-1929) lived in the northern wing, now a hotel, and Herman Gesellius occupied the dark log building, now a restaurant.
