There are two Bar-le-Ducs; the aristocratic upper town, and the lower town dating from the Merovingian era, skirted by the River Omain and the Rhone-Rhine canal. The dukes made it the capital of the Barrois region and embellished it accordingly; note the the pale stonework which gives it a certain unity. It was also the birthplace of President Raymond Poincaré, famous Marshals (Oudinot, Exelmans) and the inventor of the bicycle. Try the gooseberry jam that is de-stoned using a goose feather.
