Proud of being one of the “three fine winegrowing slopes of Ay, Hautvillers and Avenay”, Hautvillers retains its old houses with gateways in the shape of “basket handles” decorated with wrought-iron signs. The old abbey church preserves the pious memory of Dom Pérignon (1638-1715), the first to blend different wines to produce “vintages”: in recognition of this, the Moët et Chandon champagne house has named its special vintage after him.
