Hierges
: Michelin's recommendations
Set in an undulating landscape, this little village is one of the most charming in the Ardennes. It retains some houses from the 17C and a 13C mill. The Croix du Duel in the square recalls a violent encounter here in 1579. Hierges lies around the ruins of its castle, originally 9C and rebuilt in the 16C, the seat of a baron owing fealty to the Prince-Bishop of Liège and the Duke of Bouillon. The fortress is mellowed by Mosane Renaissance influences: note the decorative brickwork of its towers.
