From 1702 to 1729, Lunéville was the favoured place of residence of Léopold, Duke of Lorraine. A great admirer of the Sun King, he commissioned Germain Boffrand to build a modest “replica” of Versailles in Lunéville. Unfortunately, a part of Lunéville’s artistic history went up in smoke as a result of the fire which ravaged the south wing of the castle in 2003, destroying both the chapel and the museum. Restoration work is likely to be completed by 2016.
