Housed in a former Carmelite convent, the museum's basements contain the vestiges of ancient baths and its archeology section covers the city's brilliant Gallo-Roman and Merovingian periods. The architecture and lifestyle collections reflect everyday life in the city; note the reconstituted façades around the courtyard. The Grenier de Chèvremont tithe barn (1457) has displays of 15C works. The Fine Arts section includes works by the leader of the Metz School, Laurent-Charles Maréchal.
